Newsletter - August 2007
Well, the summer is starting to wind down, and it will soon be time
to start thinking about dusting off those brooms and sliders. There has
been quite a bit going on at the club over the summer, and we have some
exciting plans for the 2007-2008 curling season. Below are a few key highlights.
Wine & Cheese Registration
Come out on Friday, September 28th to enjoy some wine and cheese (complementary)
and register for the upcoming season. This will be a great way to reconnect
with your fellow curlers in a casual setting, while sipping on some wine
and nibbling on cheese. We will also be showing off the new compressor
for those that are interested. No, the ice won't be ready, but will be
well on its way!!! Note, beer and liquor will be available at regular bar
prices. See our picture
gallery for some photos
of the event.
Compressor Room
By the time you are reading this newsletter, most of the work in the
compressor room will be complete. Thanks to Past President Lori Savage,
Ice Maker Jason Vidler, and George Wallis for leading this extensive project.
Just like our roads, we ran into a few potholes, but they have all been
smoothed out. Work that has/will be completed is:
· Old decking and compressor removed
· New compressor installed
· New emergency doors installed - to ice area and outside
· Minor Plumbing and Electrical work done
· New decking built
· New roof installed, with soffit and facia (to reduce the run
off when it rains!)
We have had a number of people help with this project, and we will thank
them when all work is complete!
Wednesday Night Curling
At this point we are unsure of how Wednesday nights will be run. We
understand that traditionally this has been a first come/first served open
night, with the 7:00 pm draw filling very quickly. This has meant that
we have a lot of new curlers on the late draw, with not a lot of "experienced"
help. It would be ideal if we could have a mix of new and experienced curlers
on both draws, as this will make it more fun for the new curlers. With
a little help, they will get comfortable and return for the next season.
So, for registration night we will take membership forms as they come
in, and once we have all the numbers, will make a call on the draws. The
membership form will have 6:45, 9:00 and 6:45 or 9:00 as you options. Please
consider the 9:00 pm draw and help our new members
Volunteers
Every year we have a struggle getting people to commit to volunteering.
Our club needs YOU - the volunteer, to do your part. We have very low membership
rates because we offset our costs with volunteers. However, over the past
couple years, a few individuals do a lot of the work, where others only
volunteer once, or in some cases, not at all. We only ask that you volunteer
twice in a year (8-10 hrs). The opportunities are endless, from putting
in the ice, maintenance work around the club, as well as tending bar and
working the kitchen for functions throughout the season. Make volunteering
fun - do it as a team!
Please complete the volunteer section of your membership form. If required,
we will assign dates to those that do not identify any specific dates/tasks.
Feel fee to talk to Barb Thistle (Human Resources Director) or myself if
you have any questions.
Curling Club Web Site
We finally have our own web site that we hope will become a valuable
resource for all members. We will be posting league schedules, standings,
bonspiel information and other items that we hope will be relevant to our
members. We will also have information for new members, or members of the
community looking for a place to rent for a private function.
You can visit the website at www.actoncurlingclub.com.
Thanks to James and Ann Hamilton for their work on this project.
Board Position still Open
We still have the Maintenance Directors position open, as this was not
filled at the AGM. This is an important position at the club, as this person
would oversee any maintenance items. The individual is not expected to
do all the work, as volunteers would be solicited to help. Please consider
joining the board as Maintenance Director and helping the club.
Swing & Sweep
Saturday, October 13th - 9 holes of golf and 6 ends of curling. A great
way to "slide" into the curling season. BBQ Steak dinner and prizes also
included at the low price of $35.00 per person. See Gary Wellon at the
Wine & Cheese or call him at 519-853-3750 to register (individual or
team). See our picture
gallery for some photos
of the event.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. See you on September 28th at the Wine
& Cheese!
Dave Rigby,
President.
