Welcome!
The Halton-Peel Bonspiel is a rated men's curling event designed to promote sportsmanship, fellowship, and competitive competition for the experienced as well as for new beginners to this great game of curling. It has existed in various formats over the years, and this year's January 2008 event celebrates its' 40th Anniversary. The 2008 bonspiel has finished with many winners including A Champions: Team Craig, B Champions: Team Cordick, C Champions: Team Fogt and D Champions: Team Temple. Congratulations to all! Team Craig also had an 8 ender (all their rocks in the house) and you can see pictures of this and also the team champions on our photo page. Participating Curling Clubs The event currently attracts teams from five curling clubs in the Halton and Peel Regions of Ontario, Canada. These clubs are the:
The format for this fun and great event is as follows: 1) The event lasts for one week (Saturday to Saturday), and usually starts on the first Saturday of the New Year. 2) Every team is guaranteed three games; two games on the opening Saturday and one game mid-week (usually on a Monday night). Every participant also receives a commemorative pin. 3) Teams from each participating curling club will be spread out amongst all of the other participating clubs, allowing many curlers the opportunity to experience curling in another club and against teams from other clubs. Very few teams will actually start the event in their home curling club. 4) The two games played on the opening day seed teams into 4 divisions or events. Teams in the Main (A) event have won both of their games, teams in the second (B) and third (C) events have won one game and lost one game (the ranking format has changed over the years), and teams in the fourth (D) event have lost both games. 5) After the opening Saturday, the event becomes a simple elimination format, with winners advancing to the next round and the losers being eliminated from the event. 6) Sixteen (16) teams advance to the final championship day. This consists of 4 teams in each of the events (A, B, C, D), where each team is guaranteed two games on the final day. The final events are the A, B, C, D championships, and the A, B, C, D consolation events. 7) All teams advancing to the final day receive lunch, dinner, and a nice prize (so it should be fairly obvious &ldots; getting to the final day is always the objective). The event is classified as a rated event, meaning that it is inappropriate for clubs to put in "stacked" teams. The primary objective, as stated above, is to promote sportsmanship, fellowship, and to attract new curlers to this fabulous sport. Stacking a team and blowing away your opposition is not what this event is about (although lop-sided games do happen quite often). Rating a team can be difficult, subjective, and open to interpretation at times. Please consider very carefully your selection of teammates when participating in this event. Each year, one of the participating clubs is assigned the enviable (and often difficult) task of hosting the final event. This is rotated amongst the participating clubs each year. For 2008, the finals are being North Halton Golf and Curling Club. Next year (2009), the Acton Curling Club will be the event host. Halton - Peel Curling Bonspiel Committee An event of this magnitude and complexity cannot be successfully organized and run without the dedication and hard work of its' volunteers. Each participating club has been assigned a Halton-Peel Bonspiel Committee representative. These individuals have put in many hours promoting the event, recruiting the teams, and helping to organize all of the activities surrounding the event (e.g., ice allocation, budgeting, scheduling, printing, ordering pins, buying prizes, purchasing food, officiating the games, etc., etc.). So when you have a chance, please take a moment to thank these individuals, they deserve it!!!! The Halton-Peel Committee for 2008 is: Orangeville Curling Club: John Bellefleur Brampton Curling Club: John Downey Acton Curling Club: Gary Wellon Milton Curling Club: Linda Baron North Halton Golf and Country Club: Susan Le Feuvre and Denis Cordick Draw Sheet Printing & Bonspiel Pins: David Jenkins Corporate Sponsors The Halton-Peel Bonspiel also relies upon corporate sponsorship each year to help fund the event. Without their generous contributions, the event would certainly be more costly to the curlers, and it may not even exist. The Halton-Peel Bonspiel Committee and all of its' participants would like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors for 2008.
