Our League Play
With almost 400 curlers
in 8 leagues (see info below) - we have the perfect game for your level
of play. Join in the Mens, Ladies, Mixed, Senior or Little Rock/Junior
Leagues. Become a full member and play in several leagues! Click on the
following links for descriptions and times for the various leagues:
Teams are made up
of four people playing in the following positions - the lead who throws
the first stone, the second who throws next, then the third (or vice-skip)
and finally the skip (or captain) throws the final rock. Each person throws
two rocks - alternating between the two competing teams. The game is easy
to follow and the basic concepts are simple - the team with the rock closest
to the centre of the house or target wins the end and earns points. The
team with the most points at the end of the game (or draw) is the winner.

sheets at the bottom of this page. Additional information on starting times

Monday
Night Men's Competitive (6:45pm & 9pm) ........Current
Mens Team Scores (pdf) / (html)
This is a Men's competitive
league where teams are ranked into divisions (A, B, C, etc.) based on the
team's record of play. This is the night where you bring your competitive
'A' game with you, and is for those who are more serious about curling.
Teams will only play other teams within their ranked division, and will
then be re-ranked based on their record of play at the end of each round.
Teams have the option of paying into a division prize fund for a chance
to win some steaks at the end of each round. The cost per person per round
for the steaks is around $5.00. Most players typically put in their own
team, but individuals can be placed as required if teams are short on players.
Start times vary each Monday between 6:45pm and 9:00pm, with some games
played on Tuesday nights at 9:00pm. Note: For Wednesday Night Mixed
teams and spares information please go to the members
only page.
Tuesday
Night Ladies Social (6:45pm) .............................................Current
Ladies Team Scores (pdf)
This is a social night
for the ladies to get together. The ladies league makes up the teams, with
an emphasis on matching the more experienced players with the casual or
beginner curlers. Team lineups are juggled several times throughout the
season, allowing new members to the Acton Curling Club the opportunity
to meet, play, and socialize with the ladies membership. New curlers are
encouraged to join our social leagues. The Tuesday night ladies also have
designated "snack nights", where a team will collectively provide munchies
for the rest of the ladies. Games start at 7:00pm.
Wednesday
Night Mixed Social (6:45pm or 9pm) .....Current
Wed Mixed Team Scores (pdf)
This is the ideal league for new
curlers, as mixed and social are the themes here. While some may come out
and be a little competitive, most come out and play for the fun and social
aspect of the game. The league makes up the teams, with an emphasis on
matching the more experienced players with the casual or beginner curlers.
Teams are (usually) juggled at the end of each round, with 3 rounds per
season. This allows the curlers the chance to meet, play, and socialize
with a lot of different members. If you are a new curler or just want to
have fun curling, this is the night for you. Times for this night are set
times at either 6:45pm or 9:00pm.
Note: For Wednesday Night Mixed
teams and spares information please go to the members
only page.
Friday
Night Mixed, (6:45 pm & 9pm)
........................................Current
Fri Mixed Team Scores (pdf)
On this night you
typically put in your own team. Each team is to have 2 men and 2 women
with alternating positions (i.e., Male, Female, Male, Female, or reverse
order). This is a slightly more competitive night usually meant for the
more experienced curlers. New curlers are however welcomed. If you wish
to curl this night but do not have a team, you can ask the curling club
if there are any openings for those teams who need players. Start times
will vary each week between 6:45pm and 9:00pm. All teams will play each
other at least once throughout the season, with a ranked playoff at the
season end.
Seniors
Daytime, Tuesday and Thursday (8am & 10am)
Although referred to as the Seniors
Daytime curling, this league is actually open to all regular Acton Curling
Club adult members (female, male, senior, or not). The vast majority of
players in this league are however seniors. This is a "Tag Draw format",
where your team is made up on the day of play. The caliber of play is considered
social or recreational. Start times are either 8:00am or 10:00am, and players
may come out at either time (or both) to be placed on a team.
Thursday
Night Kids Programs (Little Rocks & Bantam - 6:45pm)
This time has been allocated for
the kids. After all, they are the future of this great sport, and some
may grow to become Provincial, National, World, or Olympic Champions. Under
the watchful eye and guidance of our volunteer instructors, coaches, and
parents, we teach them about this great sport. The league is made up of
the Little Rocks (6-11 years), and Bantam (12-16). It is open to all youth
regardless of their skill level. The league incorporates a teaching element
based on a skills award (badge system) prepared by Curl Ontario, as well
as game play experience amongst each other and with the volunteers. This
is a very good starter league for the young, and allows them to advance
at their own pace. The playing times will depend on the age of the child.
Juniors (ages 17 to 20) are invited and encouraged to curl with the adults.
Saturday

Bonspiels
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
A bonspiel is a curling tournament, traditionally held outdoors on a frozen
freshwater loch. The word comes from the Scottish language and means league
(or alliance or household) match (or game). (OK, so we don't play outdoors
anymore on frozen lakes or ponds, but these are still fun and often very
sociable events).
So your not a pro&ldots;.NO
big deal! This is a time to have fun, get to know people, and win great
prizes. Bonspiels are an excellent way to experience a competition without
all the pressure associated with a competitive event. It also gives curlers
the opportunity to travel to other clubs and meet curlers from other curling
clubs, or maybe even other provinces, states, or countries. Experience
generally doesn't matter, as most Bonspiels are targeted to the social
aspect of the game. You typically put in your own team, or signup as individuals
and the event organizer will place you accordingly.
For information on our upcoming
Bonspiels please check out our events
page.
Competitions
and OCA events
From time to time, the Acton Curling
Club will host various competitive competitions and/or OCA (Ontario Curling
Association) events. These competitions are for men, ladies, seniors, mixed,
juniors, or bantams. They are recommended for experienced curlers only.
For these events, you sign up as a team and are bound to specific rules
and regulations regarding the play in the event. Other clubs are involved
in these events, and some may lead to provincial or national championships.
For information on our upcoming
Bonspiels please check out our events
page.
REGARDLESS OF
THE EVENT, THE CLUB ASKS THAT YOU CHECK YOUR START TIME AND BE READY AND
BE ON THE ICE AT THAT TIME. LATE START PENALTIES MAY APPLY TO SOME LEAGUES.
On any given day, the club asks that you be ready to throw your rock. While
you are waiting for your skip to make a decision of what she/he wants,
clean your rock and be ready in the hack when they put the broom down.
Doing this saves time and keeps everyone on schedule, and you are less
likely to fall behind This is to ensure that your game finishes on time
and does not hold up other teams playing after you. It also helps to ensure
that you receive your 8 ends of curling as most leagues have time restrictions
for the start of the last end.
For more information on any of the
Acton Curling Club leagues, Bonspiels, or Competitions, please contact
the Acton Curling Club Competitions Director, Barbara Thistle, at 519-853-5075
or competitionsleagues@actoncurlingclub.com.
