Acton Curling Club
Newsletter - March 2008

As I sit and write this newsletter (March 08th) I am watching yet another winter storm batter us. With this weather, it's hard to believe the curling season is drawing to a close. I hope you have enjoyed the games and camaraderie of the club. Before we break for the summer, there are a few things to fill you in on.

Annual General Meeting

We are a member run club, and the AGM is a key meeting for members to have their say. The meeting takes place after the second game on the Saturday of the closing spiel - April 12th - approx. 2:00 pm. A number of motions have been posted, on the whiteboard in the lobby that will be presented, discussed, and voted on by members present. I would encourage you to attend and have your say.

Board Positions Open

I would like to thank Sue Burden, Gary Wellon, Brenda Catt and Barb Thistle for all their work over the past few years on the board. The have decided not to continue in their current role next year. As a result, we are looking for people to help on the board, and take up these positions - Memberships, Competitions, Rentals and Human Resources. If you are interested in helping on the board, please contact myself or any member of the board for details on these positions

Building Committee

Before we start with any "major" renovations of the club (upstairs or downstairs), the board would like input from the members. To this end we are seeking your help via a building committee. The committee will be chaired by Mike Nevins, our Maintenance Director, and will be made up of 6 members (not on the board). We are looking for 2 male, 2 female and 2 senior members to make up the committee. Their mandate will be to evaluate all options for building improvements, consider funding options, and prepare an execution plan. If you are interested in sitting on this committee, please contact Mike, Richard Dobbs, or myself.

Spring Projects

We need your help to complete several minor projects to continue to update our club. There are a few where outside help will be required, but there are others where we will need volunteers. We will be posting a project list shortly for you to sign up for a project. Some of the projects are:

  Glass end heater replaced

  Strike band of rocks ground

  Soffit/Facia/eaves installed on compressor room

Small roof leaks fixed (over ice)

Siding installed on compressor room (Exhaust Fan)

Emergency exit door (Ladies side) replaced

  Lounge painted

Computer Help

Do you have computer experience (Access database or programming), or contacts with a computer store? We would like to install a computer in the club to help with general club activities - registration, league scoring, and communication. Please contact myself or Richard Dobbs if you can help out.

Thank You

We are a member run club, and we rely on all members to volunteer their time in order to maintain our reasonable membership rates. I would like to thank all those members that volunteered your time. I would also like to thank your Board of Directors. These folks have put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the club runs smoothly. Please take the time to thank them as well.

Enjoy the remaining few weeks of curling. Have a great summer, and see you at the Open House (or golf tourney)...

Remember to check out our website throughout the summer for updates and registration information - www.actoncurlingclub.com
